Random cards from my collection #78

Card #8716
1999 Reading Phillies Multi-Ad #2 Marty Barnett

Comments on the card/player: In 6 minor league seasons, Barnett managed a 14-25 record with 7 saves. During that time he played for 8 different teams, mostly on the AA level. He never made it to the majors.
How/When acquired: I bought the 28-card set for $5.00 in September 2006.

Card #38163
2008 Topps Allen & Ginter #60 Prince Fielder

Comments on the card/player: Fielder reached the playoffs for the first time with the Brewers in 2008. They got eliminated in 4 games by the eventual World Series winner, the Phillies.
How/When acquired: Paid $0.25/card for a blaster box in August 2008.

Card #40576
2013 Topps #340 Franklin Gutierrez

Comments on the card/player: Gutierrez missed most of the 2013 season with a hamstring injury. According to baseball-reference.com, his nickname is "Death to Flying Things", apparently due to his good defensive outfield play.
How/When acquired: Paid $0.26/card for a Topps Series 2 blaster box in June 2013.

Card #17686
2010 Topps Attax #120 Mike Lowell

Comments on the card/player: These sets were available from 2009 to 2011. I bought a few packs each year just to have some but I never really liked the cards. We're probably about due for Topps to attempt another game set. I can hardly wait.
How/When acquired: Paid $0.25/card for some loose packs in March 2010.

Card #33831
2008 Upper Deck First Edition Star Quest #7 Matt Holliday

Comments on the card/player: Upper Deck produced these "Star Quest" cards in their 2008 and 2009 sets. There was one in each pack of cards. There were seeming 100s of parallels with different colors and availability. The more difficult to find cards had some kind of mail-in contest on the back. Upper Deck had a real big thing about incorporating Xs in their designs then.
How/When acquired: Paid $0.06/card for a Fairfield Extreme Value box in July 2012.

Card #13010
2009 Upper Deck #866 Ichiro

Comments on the card/player: One of the most unattractive Upper Deck sets ever.
How/When acquired: Paid $0.25/card for a Series 2 blaster in July 2009.

Card #22169
2010 Topps Chrome #54 Brandon Phillips

Comments on the card/player: Phillips, at second base, made his first All-Star appearance and won a Gold Glove in 2010.
How/When acquired: Paid $0.81/card for loose packs in October 2010.

Card #34904
2012 Topps Allen & Ginter Mini #225 Roger Maris

Comments on the card/player: Maris was popular with Topps in 2012. He also appeared in the 1987 Mini insert set and in Gypsy Queen.
How/When acquired: Paid $0.46/card for a blaster in July 2012. Compare the price to the 2008 A&G above.

Card #3476
1992 Upper Deck #714 Shawon Dunston

Comments on the card/player: Dunston was a regular up until the 1992 season when he required surgery to repair a herniated disk. He only played 18 games in 1992 and only 7 in 1993. He played another 15 years after 1993 but only reached over 100 games in 3 of those seasons.
How/When acquired: Don't know.

Card #34738
1989 Donruss All Stars #54 Bob Knepper

Comments on the card/player: Bob Knepper had a 14-5 season with the Astros in 1988, good enough to get him into the All-Star game. His record looks even more impressive considering that the Astros were only 82-80 in 1988. In 1987, Knepper had led the league in losses going 8-17.
How/When acquired: I got this in my 2012 Summer Clearance trade.
