Random Phillies cards of the Week

I thought I'd interrupt endless trade posts with some random Phillies. Enjoy.

1950s-1970s: 1978 Topps #513 Barry FooteBarry had 57 at bats for the Phillies in 1978, hitting .158. He was a back-up catcher for most of his career. He managed to get one AB against the Dodgers in the NLCS but struck-out.

1980s: 1987 Fleer Glossy #171 Don CarmanThe Phillies were 80-82 in 1987. They finished 15 games behind the Cardinals who went on to lose the World Series to the Twins. Carman finished the season 13-11, with a 4.22 ERA.

1990s: 1996 Bazooka #16 Heathcliff SlocumbIn 1995, Slocumb was an All-Star and saved 32 games for the Phillies. After the season, the Phils traded him to the Red Sox for Glenn Murray, Ken Ryan and Lee Tinsley.

2000s: 2006 Topps Heritage #471 Ryan MadsonMadson started 17 games for the Phillies in 2006 and appeared in another 33. He finished the year with an 11-9 record and two saves. He's been only a reliever since.

2011 Summer Clearance Trade with the Night Owl

Greg, the Night Owl is another long standing trading partner. He saves his excess Phillies and Astros for me and I save excess Dodgers for him. I got an offer earlier in the year from my Dodgers which I made but was able to pile up enough more for Greg.

2006 Topps Allen & Ginter #65 Jon Lieber
2006 Topps Allen & Ginter #130 Mike LieberthalTwo missing Phillies from this set, Lieber and Lieberthal.

2009 O-Pee-Chee Black #332 Kyle KendrickI was surprised to find that I had no Phillies cards from this parallel set. Greg also sent me an Astros O-Pee-Chee Black, the only Astro card from the set I already had. Win some, lose some.

2009 Topps Allen & Ginter National Pride #47 Ryan HowardI pulled a lot of these National Pride cards but didn't get this one.

2010 Bowman Gold #160 Roy HalladayKeep sending those Roy Halladay cards.

2010 Topps Chrome #9 Shane VictorinoI only had a couple of these 2010 Topps Chrome Phillies. Wasn't the 2010 set the most annoying in years? I don't understand what Topps does from year to year with these Chrome cards to alter their warp factor.

2011 Bowman Finest Futures Domonic BrownBrown made his debut in the outfield last season and the Phillies liked what they saw so much, they let Jayson Werth go to free agency and made Brown the starting right fielder this year.

2011 Bowman Chrome Prospects #87 Jarred CosartThis was a fun card to get. This kid was born in League City TX, which is where I live. We moved here in 1995. Cosart was born in 1990 which makes him 2 years younger than my youngest son. It is likely they were in high school together although my son doesn't remember him.

2011 Topps 60 Years of Topps Reprints Craig BiggioThis card really stood out from the rest that Greg sent. It was the only old card in the pack. Oops, wait, fooled again. Only the second post-career Biggio card I have.

2011 Topps Opening Day Stars #180 Roy OswaltThis is the second Phillies card from this set I've gotten in the Clearance Trade.

2011 Topps Opening Day Stars #1 Roy HalladayThese cards don't scan well, but they are cool cards.

Song of the Week - It Better End Soon by Chicago

I loved the first two Chicago albums and played them to death. This is from Chicago II. I wish I had seen them perform live back then.

Birthdays July 3 - July 9

July 3
1993 Bowman #701 Felipe and Moises Alou
Moises was born in 1966 in Atlanta, GA. He was the Pirates 1st round draft pick in 1986. He started his career with the Pirates in 1990 but was traded to the Expos later in the year where he played for his father. He played for 17 years and finished his career with a .303 career BA, 332 home runs, 1,287 RBIs, and 2,341 hits. He was in the right place at the right time and won a World Series ring with the 1997 Marlins. He was a 6-time All-Star. All in all, I'd say a good candidate for the Hall of Fame when he becomes eligible in 2013.

July 4
1976 Topps #656 White Sox/Chuck Tanner
Chuck was born in 1928 in New Castle, PA. He was signed as a free agent by the Boston Braves in 1946. He had an undistinguished 8-year career as an outfielder and pinch-hitter. He is best know, of course, as a manager. From 1970 through 1988 he had a manager job (White Sox 1970-1975), A's (1976), Pirates (1977-1985), and Braves (1986-1988). I mostly remember him as the Pirates manager, during those years when there was a great cross-state rivalry between the Pirates and Phillies. His "We Are Family" Pirates won the World Series in 1979. I had missed this news, but Tanner passed away this past February.

July 5
1989 Donruss #434 Rich Gossage
Goose was born in 1951 in Colorado Springs, CO. He was the 9th round draft pick of the Chicago White Sox in 1970. In his 22-year career (1972-1994) he played for the White Sox, the Pirates, the Yankees, the Padres, the Cubs, the Giants, the Rangers, the A's, and the Mariners. He was one of the top relief pitchers through the 1980s, compiling 310 career saves. I believe he also lead the majors in wild facial hair several times. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2008.

July 6
1997 Score Premium Stock # 237 Lance Johnson
One Dog was born in 1963 in Cincinnati, OH. He was the 6th round draft pick for the Cardinals in 1986 and made is major league debut with them in 1987. In his 14-year career he played for the Cardinals, the White Sox, the Mets, the Cubs, and the Yankees. Johnson is known for hitting triples and is only one of 4 players to lead a league in triples 5 times. He finished his career with 117 triples, a career batting average of .291 and 327 stolen bases.

July 7
1997 Donruss Franchise Features #4 Chuck Knoblauch
Chuck was born in 1968 in Houston, TX. He was the Twins #1 draft pick in 1989. He was the AL Rookie of the Year in 1991 and helped lead the Twins to a World Series win that year. He was a 4-time All-Star. He played for the Twins through 1997. He signed a $24MM contract with the Yankees in 1998. His last year was in 2002, with the Royals. He had a career .289 BA, with 98 home runs. According to Wikipedia, he currently lives in the Houston area and has no interest in returning to baseball in any capacity.

July 8
1990 Upper Deck #345 Jerome Walton

Jerome was born in 1965 in Newnan, GA. He was the Cubs 2nd round draft pick in 1986 and made his debut with the Cubs in 1989. He had a fabulous rookie season (including a 30-day hitting streak) and was the NL Rookie of the Year. Unfortunately, he joined the legion of MLB players who don't live up to the promise of their rookie years. Although he played for 10 years, he only appeared in 598 games (most of those games in just 4 of those years).

July 9
1989 Topps #168 Willie Wilson
Willie was born in 1955 in Montgomery AL. He's one of only 7 players born within my lifetime on this date. Willy was with the Royals team that lost the 1980 World Series to the Phillies, so he has a special place in my heart. He had a pretty good year in 1980, leading the league in runs (133), hits (230) and triples (15). He batted .326 for the season and finished 4th in the MVP voting. In 1983, Wilson and 3 Royals teammates (Willie Aikens, Vida Blue and Jerry Martin) were involved in a drug scandal. They were convicted of attempting to purchase cocaine, becoming the first active MLB players to serve jail time. Wilson served 81 days in jail in 1984, but was able to return to the Royals before the end of the season.

2011 Summer Clearance Trade with Steve G.

Steve, of the White Sox Cards blog, was my first Internet trading partner. We've been swapping Phillies/Astros for White Sox cards for several years now. This lot from him is mostly cards from 2009-2011. Of the Phillies he sent, I needed 25 of them. He did send me a few 2011 Phillies cards I already have but they will go to a good home. I'll be sending some excess Phillies cards to my 26-year-old niece, Katie, in Philadelphia. She is not only winner of several Gold Medals for swimming in the Special Olympics, she is an enormous Phillies fan. He also sent me a mess of Astros cards but I haven't gotten to them yet.

2009 Topps Heritage #515 Antonio BastardoI think I had every Phillie from this set except for this card. Due to injuries, Bastardo is now the fifth closer for the Phillies this year. He's doing a great job. Not only didn't I have this card, I don't have any other Bastardo cards. And no wonder. According to Beckett.com, there are only 19 Bastardo cards and they are all from 2009.

2010 Topps Cards Your Mom Threw Out Original Back Cole HamelsThese reprints are hard to tell from the original until you find the tiny word "Reprint" on the back. As I'm preparing this post, the Phillies, behind Hamels, are beating the Marlins in Florida, 8-2.

2010 Topps Turkey Red #123 Roy HalladayThe only Phillie I have from this insert set.

2011 Topps Throwback #219 Carlos RuizThe only Phillies Throwback I have.

2011 Topps Diamond Stars #15 Cliff LeeOoh, shiny.

2011 Topps Attax Gold Foil #179 Roy HalladayI only bought one package of this junk so I'm going to have to rely on the kindness of fellow bloggers to get any more Phillies. Steve sent me several non-foil Phillies as well.

2011 Topps Heritage #111 Brad LidgeLidge was supposed to be the Phillies closer this year but he's been injured all year.

2011 Topps Gypsy Queen #139 Raul IbanezI didn't get too many Phillies in the blasters I bought so I was happy to see this, along with the Ryan Howard and Roy Oswalt cards.
