Song of the Week - Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears for Fears

I have a soft spot in my heart for mid-1980s music but not because I was in high school at the time. I was in my 30's, married with one kid and another on the way. In the first half of 1986 I was working shift work to provide engineering support for the pilot plant of a new product my company was developing. Therefore I was awake at weird hours compared to the rest of my family. I spent a lot of time listening to the radio. There was a new station in the Philadelphia area trying to get established playing new wave music. They had virtually no sponsors and played music with little or no commercial interruptions. I listened to them (I can't remember the call letters) and a few college stations that came in loud and clear in the small hours of the night.

Songs From The Big Chair was released by Tears for Fears in 1985 and was a huge hit with a number of hit singles. They were all over the radio in 1986.

Strangely, I never saw the video for this until I went looking for it this morning.

Welcome to your life
There's no turning back
Even while we sleep
We will find you
Acting on your best behaviour
Turn your back on mother nature
Everybody wants to rule the world

Its my own design
Its my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help me make the most
Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

There's a room where the light won't find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do I'll be right behind you

So glad we've almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world

I can't stand this indecision
Married with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to rule the world
Say that you'll never never never never need it
One headline why believe it ?
Everybody wants to rule the world

All for freedom and for pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world
