Swing, Buster, Swing!

Does this picture look a bit odd to you? The ball looks as big as a softball. Mr. Posey is not looking at it. And this has to be the latest swing ever. Here is the same photo on the Topps Opening Day card.
Where's the ball? It looks like the image manipulator mistook someone's shoulder for the ball. Oops.

Birthdays June 12 - June 18

June 12
1991 Upper Deck Final Edition #8 Ryan Klesko
Ryan was born in Westminster in 1971. He was a 5th round draft pick by the Braves in 1989. He played 1st base and left field. He was with the Braves from 1992 to 1999, the Padres from 2000 to 2006 and finished he career with the Giants in 2007. He finished his career with a .270 BA and 278 home runs. Klesko became the first player to hit a home run in three consecutive World Series road games when he did so against the Indians in games 3, 4, and 5 in the 1995 World Series. Having been with the Braves all through the 1990s, he's appeared in 62 postseason games and has a World Series ring from that 1995 series.

June 13
2010 Bowman Draft Gold #22 Jonathan Lucroy
Not a lot of good choices for this date so I'll go with a young player. Jonathan was born in 1986 in Eustis, FL. He was the Brewers #3 draft pick in 2007. He appeared in 75 games last year but has already been in 51 games this year and is the Brewer's everyday catcher. He's batting .274 in 2011 with 6 home runs. This is impressive. On May 28, 2011, he pulled off a walk-off suicide bunt, scoring Ryan Braun, to beat the Giants.

June 14
2003 Topps Shoebox #20 Don Newcombe
Since Newk is far and away the best player born on this date, I had to dig this card out of a box and scan it. He was born in 1926 in Madison, NJ. The Brooklyn Dodgers signed his as a free agent in 1946 and he spent 7 of his 10-year career with the Dodgers. According to Wikipedia, he is the only player to win the Rookie of the Year, a Cy Young Award and an MVP award in a career. The Cy Young and MVP came after his 1956 season when he was 27-7 with the Dodgers. He was also a 4-time All-Star. He received HOF votes in every year he was eligible, but not enough to get in.

June 15
2002 Upper Deck Peoples Choice Game Jersey Andy Pettitte
There were a lot of choices for today. Two Hall of Famers (Wade Boggs and Billy Williams) a future HOFer (Time Lincecum) and a guy who played in the 1880s named Peak-A-Boo Veach, but I decided to go with another future HOFer. Andy was born in 1972 in Baton Rouge, LA. He was a 22nd round draft pick of the Yankees in 1990. Except for three years with the Astros (2004-2006) he played his entire 16-year career with the Yankees. Although injured for most of his first year in Houston, he bounced back with a 17-9 record in 2005 to help lead the Astros to their first World Series (which they lost in four games to the White Sox). Overall Andy had a 240-138 record with a career ERA of 3.88. He has a 19-10 record in 30 postseason appearances including 8 World Series. He has 5 World Series rings, his most recent acquired over the Phillies in 2009 when he went 2-0 in the Series.

June 16
2002 Donruss Originals #304 Kerry Wood
Kerry was born in 1977 in Irving TX. He was the Cubs #1 pick (and 4th pick overall) in 1995. He was 13-6 with the Cubs in 1998 and was the NL Rookie of the Year. He then missed the entire 1999 season due to an elbow injury. Injuries seem to be the defining aspect of his career. He has been on the DL 14 times in his 13-year career. In 2004, the Cubs started using him as a reliever, and made him their closer. He had 34 saves that year. He signed with the Indians after the 2008 season and had 20 saves that year. He was traded to the Yankees in 2010 but this year he is back with the Cubs. Sometimes you see a guy come into the baseball with great promise but, for one reason or another, can't make it on the major league level. And sometimes you see a guy like Wood who seemed poised to be one of the greats but was cut down by injuries.

June 17
1992 Ultra #148: Manny Lee
There weren't a lot of good choices for this year. Manny was born in 1965 in that noted baseball town of San Pedro de Macoris, DR. Wikipedia lists 30 players as having been born there. Manny was a middle infielder, originally drafted by the Mets in 1982. He played 8 years for the Blue Jays, 2 years for the Rangers and finished his career in 1995 with the Cardinals. Manny was mainly a part-time player but he has something many baseball players don't, a World Series ring., won with the Jays in 1992.

June 18
2003 Topps Shoebox #45 Lou Brock
Lou was born in 1939 in El Dorado, AR. He was signed as a free agent by the Cubs in 1960 and played for them from 1961 to 1946. Until I saw this card, I didn't realize that he played for anyone other than the Cardinals. He was traded to the Cardinals in 1946 and played there for the next 15 years. Brock is know mainly as a base stealer, having swiped 938 in his career. He is second behind Rickey Henderson. In order to steal that many bases, you have to get an base a lot. Brock had a career BA of .293. He won a number of major awards including the 1976 Babe Ruth Award, the 1974 Player of the Year Award (the year he stole 118 bases), the 1957 Roberto Clemente Award, the 1977 Lou Gehrig Memorial Award and the 1979 Hatch Award. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1985, his first year of eligibility.

Movie of the Week - Super 8

Written and directed by J. J. Abrams. Produced by Steven Spielberg. How could this possibly not be a great movie? What a dumb question, there are many ways in which this could have sucked but fortunately, it does not suck. In fact, it's a great movie. The movie mostly told from the perspective of a group of junior high school kids. One of them is trying to produce a zombie movie to enter into a Super 8 movie festival. You may have to explain to your younger children what Super 8 is and why the kids didn't just make a video with their iPhones. It's 1978, an apparently more innocent time. They kids are at the small town train station (hopefully you won't have to explain trains) filming late at night. As they are rehearsing the scene, they hear a train coming. The kid director is ecstatic. "Atmosphere" he says and gets the camera rolling.

He got lot's more atmosphere than he expected as a pickup truck drives in front of the train just pass the station, resulting in a spectacular crash. The kids go running and screaming in different directions as flaming wreckage pours down around them.

The next day things start to get weird. All the town dogs disappear. People start disappearing. The engines get stolen from every car on a used-car lot. Microwave ovens get stolen from people's homes. And a massive contingent of Air Force personnel arrive to take over the wrecked train.

The kids are really good in this. Joe, played by 15-year old Joel Courtney is sweet and vulnerable as a kid still, 4 months later, trying to cope with the accidental death of his mother. Shy and nerdy, he takes the lead in trying to figure out what's going on. Alice, played by 13-year-old Elle Fanning, is also sweet. She's recruited to be the film's only female character by the kid director because he has an enormous crush on her (as apparently does every boy in the area). It's funny, that in the movie, she's supposed to be a bit older than the boys but in real life she's younger.

I highly recommend this movie. And bring the kids. There is some strong language (mostly used by the kids, so probably nothing your kids haven't heard, or probably said). Beyond some longing looks between Joe and Alice, there is no sex. The movie might be a bit intense for younger kids.

2011 Summer Clearance Trade - National League West

It's that time of the year again. That's right, it's time for the annual Capewood's Collections Summer Clearance Trade. We've been doing this since way back in 2010. This is your chance to get a pile of cards from your favorite team and all it's going to cost you is Phillies and/or Astros cards that you don't want. My junk wax for your junk wax. To be fair, not all the cards I'm offering are junk but they are mostly going to be commons with some star cards. No relics, no autos, no serial numbered cards. There is a large variety of cards available from the 1980s through 2011. I'm going to present representative cards from each team, by conference.

If you're interested in making a deal please claim your team in the comments. We'll conclude the deal via email. While I'm interested in any Phillies or Astros, I would prefer post-1980s Phillies and post-1994 Astros. Oddball cards from any time are welcome.
