2011 Topps Gypsy Queen Relics

I like relic cards as much as the next collector but I don't often like a set well enough to try and collect it. In fact I only did this once, with the 2003 50-card set Stadium Club Born in the USA Relics. It took years but I finally got them all. Last year I got taken with the Topps Gypsy Queen Relics, and since there are only 20 of them, I decided to try for the set. I've got 12 but I think the last 8 are going to take awhile. So I decided to share what I have. Here are what I have, in alphabetical order.

I'm guessing that I have a full selection of uniform colors. Braun's card is gray.

Braun's fellow teammate's card is beige.

Another gray.

The first of several reds.

A white swatch. I guess I'd like it better if it were teal.

Red, but a slightly different shade.

This is the latest acquisition, and hey, it's a bat!

Werth was a National last year but I prefer a Phillie relic card.

I already had a white Red Sox card so I'm glad this one's red.

If you've worked your way to the end, congratulations. The other thing I like about these cards (aside from the general overall Gypsy Queen design and the relics) is that the relic cards feature a different picture of the player than the base card.

1992 Stadium Club #290 John Kruk

The first two years of Stadium Club, 1991 and 1992, are among my favorite sets ever. Here John Kruk daintily runs the bases. I like how the fielder in the background is running the other way, indicating John hit a gapper.

2004 MLB Showdown Pennant Run #107 Tom Glavine

From one of my favorite sets to one of my least favorite. MLB Showdown was one of many attempts to make a baseball card based game (think Topps Attack). This set was particularly infuriating to me as a collector since Since there were three variations on this set: MLB Showdown, MLB Showdown Pennant Run and MLB Showdown Trading Deadline. They are impossible to tell apart.

1997 Upper Deck #125 Wade Boggs

I always like this year of Upper Deck. The wood grained foil at the bottom is attractive and the gold foil shields, like this one for the 1996 All-Star game were distinctive. Or maybe I just like the shields because the All-Star game was in Philadelphia, my home town.

1991 Score 100 Rising Stars #19 Willie Blair

Score 100 Rising Stars was a stand-alone 100-card set available as a complete set. I don't remember ever seeing them for sale back in 1991 but I've gotten a few in repacks. The design is very much like the 1991 Score base set.

1996 Ultra #257 Mickey Morandini

Another Phillies card comes up at random. What can I say but that I own a lot of Phillies cards. The card exhibits a poor use of foil on the front. Even in person, the player's name is hard to read on the card.

1988 Score #575 Nolan Ryan

When I started collecting in 1985 I was kind of a Topps snob (don't ask me why, I don't know). I'm pretty sure I didn't buy any packs of this inaugural issue of Score. To this day I don't really care for it. The choice of border colors may be way. In 2009 I bought a large box of assorted sports cards and other sports memorabilia at our church bazaar. As punishment for my sins I found a unopened box of 1988 Score. And that's how I acquired this card.

1995 Upper Deck #26 Doug Drabek

1995 was my first summer in Houston and the year I started collecting Astros cards as well as Phillies cards. Drabek was a player I'd already been collecting. This is another Upper Deck set that I like.

For it's second year of Ultra, Fleer introduced a glossy finish and gold foil. Another one of my favorite sets,

The only thing I really remember about the 1980 Astros team (besides the uniforms) is that the Phillies beat them to advance to the World Series.

2011 Topps A&G Discount Box

Perhaps you're sick of 2011 Allen & Ginter. If so, you can skip this post. Go ahead, I won't mind. I was in Target last Friday and they had a blaster box of A&G at 20% off the regular price. I probably shouldn't have considering how much of this product I bought this year and my bad experience earlier in the week with the 2008 box of UD Masterpieces. But I did. I was very happy. Of the 48 cards in the box, I needed 22 of them. Pretty good odds. I'm not going to show them all but just a few of interest.

2011 Topps Allen & Ginter #28 John Lindsey

It's nice to get rookie cards but I don't think we should hope for much from John Lindsey. He was a 33-year-old rookie in 2010, having been the Rockies 13th round draft pick in 1995. 1995!

2011 Topps Allen & Ginter #97 Zach Britton

Another rookie but maybe we like him better. He was 11-11 with the 69-93 Orioles last year.

2011 Topps Allen & Ginter #321 Mark Reynolds

Here's a trivial question for you. Who is the only player to lead his league in striking out three seasons in a row, sign a 3-year contract worth about $24 million with a team in the other league, and then lead that league in strikeouts? Why Mark Reynolds, of course. I have not actually determined if Mark Reynolds is the only answer to this question.

I only had a handful of the mini black cards, and no rookies. Getting 2011 AL Rookie of the Year isn't bad.

2011 Topps Allen & Ginter Mini World's Most Mysterious Figures #5 D. B. Cooper

Another Wikipedia card. Not too surprising since nobody really knows what he looks like. This is an FBI composite drawing. 40 years ago, Cooper, or whatever his real name is, pulled off the only, apparently successful plane skyjacking in the US.

So what is this card? I've have some of the cards with these corner decorations in black and a few in gold. But those had the things in all four corners. This only has one corner covered.

Random Cards of the Week

2011 is rapidly coming to a close. I've been doing a feature all year where I feature baseball birthday's of the week. This was really just an excuse to show off my collection. I need another gimmick for 2012. After not being able to think of anything better, I thought of this. Just featuring 10 random cards from my collection. My card images are basically numbered in the order they were put into my card images database. I scan all my cards at a resolution which results in an image about 50% larger than the actual card. So you can click on any of the images and get a closer look.

My other thought was to do a weekly post featuring debut dates. I could probably do both. Does anybody have any thoughts?
