Your 2015 Sugerland Skeeters

The Skeeters are one of 8 teams in the independent Atlantic League. The other 7 teams are all on the East Coast. The Skeeters are the newest team in the league, having been founded in 2012. My son and I went to see them play a few weeks ago. They played the Bridgeport (CT) Bluefish, founded in 1998, one of the oldest teams.

The last time I saw them play was in 2012 when Roger Clemens, amid rumors that he might come out of retirement, started the game. Here's my post about that game.

The good news is that the Skeeters won the game, 2-1 with a walk-off wild pitch. With the bases loaded and no outs, the Bluefish pitcher threw a wild pitch, game over.

Here are some of the 2015 Skeeters.

The Skeeters are managed by

Gary Gaetti 1989 Topps #220

Gaetti had a 20-year major league career, half of that with the Twins. He's the only manager the Skeeters have had.

Allan Dykstra 2010 Bowman Chrome Prospects #44
Dykstra was the Padres #1 pick in 2008. He finally made it to the majors with the Rays, in fact was on the opening day roster. After 13 games, and hitting only .129, he was sent down to AAA and the released. In 16 games with the Skeeters he's hitting .179. Although he's only been with the team a few months, the guy sitting in front of us was wearing an autographed Dykstra jersey.

Delwyn Young 2007 Topps Heritage #146
Young was the Dodgers 4th round pick in 2002 and played for the Dodgers ('06-'08) and Pirates ('09-'10). He was released after the 2010 season and has been scuffling ever since. This is his second year with the Skeeters. He's hitting .278 with 9 homers.

Daryle Ward 2003 Leaf #173
Ward is a former big league player (11 years) and former Astros ('98-'02). He's been playing in the Atlantic League since 2012 but just signed with the Skeeters on August 5.

Willy Taveras 2006 Sweet Spot #7
Another former major league player and former Astro. In 2008, Taveras lead the National League with 68 stolen bases when he played for the Rockies. He's been out of the major leagues since 2010. In 54 games for the Skeeters he has 17 steals.

Andrew Carpenter 2009 Topps Target #12
Carpenter was the Phillies 2nd round pick in 2006. He had a 5 year career (mostly with the Phillies) with a 1-1 record and a 7.56 ERA as a reliever. With the Skeeters this year he is 3-4 with a 7.39 ERA.
